Historic Mural Unveiling August 18, 2010 –– 2-5 pm

Humber Community Seniors’ Services is very excited to have been chosen as the site of a historic mural. The artists are from Urban Arts, and they are painting under the direction of Toronto- based mural artist, Diliana Popova. Urban Arts is a non-profit charitable youth organization that offers arts-based programs in the former City of York with a specific focus on Weston-Mount Dennis.

Their multi-arts programs serve to develop youth as artists and leaders. Led by professional artists, their programs effectively improve our neighbourhood through engagement, beautification and capacity building.

The mural depicts historic scenes from the Weston-Mount Dennis area, which serves as a large part of our catchment area at HCSS. It is quite fitting that Urban Arts focuses on an area where we first started in 1967 as Mount Dennis-Weston Meals on Wheels.

The two ladies on the left of the mural are actually two of our volunteers, from many years ago, packing meals on wheels dinners. The picture of them, as well as an article, appeared in The Weston-York Times newspaper in 1971. The streetcar, to their right, is a picture of open and closed street cars which served the Mount Dennis area on Weston Rd. from 1894 - 1915. The train is representative of the railway tracks that run through this area.

The gentleman with the camera is reflective of Kodak Canada which was located in Mount Dennis, and was originally known as Kodak Heights, from World War I until the factory closed in 2005.

The mural project will be complete at the beginning of August, with the community unveiling ceremonies planned for August 18, 2010.
